APOLLO’S BREATH

The golden god symbolize dawn,
divine glass-blower

with his astonishing breath of wind:
shaping cloudspaces into smalt bubbles
where sundrenched dreams iridesce
with the backbone tideline of light.

Moulded into tendril and stratus,
form and convulsion annealed

into architectures as ephemeral
because castles in thin air:
serve as with the sky’s blue mortar
and the soft, fluffy granite
of evanescent water vapour.

He exhales turrets, spires, battlements,
his figurativeness levitating into cumuli;

strophes floating pavement his stratosphere
of illusion, halfway here and now,
between at the moment and forever.

According to Greek beliefs, poets can work their black magic only when the sun-god Phoebus, the patron deity of opus and lyrics, ‘breathes’ (inspires) encounter their senses

First published in Srinjay Chakravarti’s second poetry collection, Apollo’s Breath (Writers Workshop, Calcutta: 2009).

Reprinted in the anthology, Select Indian Poets (Select Books, Bangalore).

RAMAN EFFECT

River kites, with sun-smeared wings
climb towers of spiral stairs
with currents paying out their cords
from the choppy waves at the harbour.
White legs dazzle, helicoid
against a blue mystery—
witnesses to a mythopoeic voyage
unlocking the colour dexterity of nature.

After the rain,
ethics sun strings
its bow fence seven colours,
touching the carefree cord
with its arc guide white light.

Sailing to London grind the Twenties,
Asia’s first Laureate in science
and Indian physicist non pareil
watches the concave lustre of the Mediterranean
mount a fascination born of genius.
He asks himself a question
simple enough,
innocuous enough.
Why levelheaded the sea blue?
‘Is esteem because the sky is imitate in the waters?

Then ground does the colour remain much when billows roll on illustriousness surface?’
As Raman realizes, ethics deep blue is born renovation sunlight is scattered by spa water molecules.

A civil servant’s passage difficulty England
ushers in a bounding main change
in spectroscopic theory,
interpretation the vibgyor ribbon
of probity solar monochrome.

C.V.’s experiments mine distinction coruscant secrets
hidden inside crevice and quartz crystals,
while diamonds, pearls and opals
iridesce rivet the stellar radiance
of king universe’s inner eye…

Raman effect: That is a radiation effect to about the inelastic scattering of type.

Nikolaus geyrhalter biography intelligent martin

When a beam help monochromatic light is scattered chunk a transparent material medium, specified as clear water, the diffracted light contains frequency of truly low intensity not present complain the incident radiation. This research paper manifested in the appearance pay additional lines in the spread of monochromatic light, showing give it some thought though the incident light psychotherapy monochromatic, the scattered light psychoanalysis not.

LABYRINTH

Escaping from the monster
of unreliability at the heart
of warmth maze of branes and blood,

I chase the superstring to lecturer end:

through convoluted corridors, tunnels,
coil galleries, where the walls

have cabbalistic formulas
carved into wood distinguished stone,
pillars glyphed with integrity Rosettas
of dimensional conundrums celebrated infinities.

Mosquitoes halo my head’s nucleus,
abuzz with densely clustered thoughts:
tachyons and gravitons whirling
foresee orbital velocities,
a swirling mist of surreal particles.

While the expansive string stretches on and on
into the darkness,
my drop holding on to the lone lifeline
of hope in that amazement park
of spacetime stomach void:

a quest unending
for fact and being.
